Stability of Core-Annular Flow with Very Small Viscosity Ratio

چکیده
It is known that the stability problem for core-annular flow of very viscous crude oil and water is singular, the water annulus appears to be inviscid with boundary layers at the pipe wall and at the interface. In the present paper, this singular problem is treated by the method of matched asymptotic expansions using ∈ = m/Rα as a small parameter. There are two cases of instability corresponding to different positions of the critical point in the annulus. One case is when the critical point is far away from the interface, the other is when the critical point is close to the interface within a distance of order ∈1/3. In both cases, the equations for the eigenvalues are derived, and the explicit forms for the neutral curves are given. The stability problem is also treated by the modified finite element code used by Hu and Joseph [ J. Fluid Mech. 205, 359 ( 1989); Phys. Fluids A 1, 1659 ( 1989)], taking into account the boundary layers at the pipe wall and at the interface. The results of the two methods agree where they overlap, but the finite element technique goes further. Stability of Annular Flow and Slugging
In this work we propose an effective viscosity criterion for the stabilization of annular gas-liquid and liquid-particle flows and an inertial mechanism which drives waves into slugs in slugging gas-liquid flows. Annular flow is stable when the fluid having the higher effective viscosity occupies the core region and the lower viscosity fluid is the annulus. The eddy viscosity criterion is shown...
متن کاملCore-annular flow through a horizontal pipe: Hydrodynamic counterbalancing of buoyancy force on core
A theoretical investigation has been made of core-annular flow: the flow of a high-viscosity liquid core surrounded by a low-viscosity liquid annular layer through a horizontal pipe. Special attention is paid to the question of how the buoyancy force on the core, caused by a density difference between the core and the annular layer, is counterbalanced. From earlier studies it is known that at t...
متن کاملA Numerical Study of the Effect of Aspect Ratio on Heat Transfer in an Annular Flow Through a 270-Degree Curved Pipe.
In the present paper, a three dimensional annular developing incompressible laminar flow through 270- degree curved pipe is numerically simulated. The dimensionless governing equations of continuity, momentums and energy are driven in toroidal coordinates. The governing equations are discretized by projection algorithm using forward difference in time and central difference in space. A three-di...
متن کاملExchange flow of two immiscible fluids and the principle of maximum flux
The steady, coaxial flow in which two immiscible, incompressible fluids of differing densities move past each other slowly in a vertical cylindrical tube has a continuum of possibilities due to the arbitrariness of the interface between the fluids. By invoking the presence of surface tension to at least restrict the shape of any interface to that of a circular arc or full circle, we consider th...
متن کاملFrequency Aanalysis of Annular Plates Having a Small Core and Guided Edges at Both Inner and Outer Boundaries
This paper deals with frequency analysis of annular plates having a small core and guided edges at both inner and outer boundaries. Using classical plate theory the governing differential equation of motion for the annular plate having a small core is derived and solved for the case of plate being guided at inner and outer edge boundaries. The fundamental frequencies for the first six modes of ...
